Habitats for Communal Living
Originally made for a public art commission for Art Across the City, Swansea, Nick Jordan’s bird houses are customised hand painted versions of purple martin houses, which are unique to North America. With no purple martins present in the UK, the bird houses should attract fellow cavity-nesting native species such as swifts and starlings, their European cousins. With UK numbers declining severely, swifts and starlings are on the Red List of conservation concern, and rely heavily on human-provided, high structures for nesting. The bird boxes could also provide useful places for birds to roost.
The artist also made a film, Nature House Inc., which documents the proliferation of birdhouses in the Illinois town where they are manufactured and put out on public display.
