MUKA (Most United Knowledgeable Artists) was founded in Johannesburg by a group of young people who found themselves homeless in the chaos at the end of Apartheid. In 1995 they came together under the guidance of Peter Ndebele and began creating theatre pieces to perform on the streets, in churches, in schools and in the community centres. M.U.K.A. Project runs community theatre workshops and discussions on violence, drug abuse, prostitution, rape, HIV/AIDS, and homelessness with over hundred different community organisations within South Africa and abroad.
M.U.K.A. Project first original production was The Chain, performed at the Windybrow Youth Drama Festival in 1996. It won four awards, including Best Script, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Second Best Drama. In 1998, M.U.K.A. Project got awarded the Creativity Excellence Award at the 18th Source Theatre Festival in Washington DC / USA for its contribution to the South African/US-American co-production Gift.
In December 1999, M.U.K.A. Project for the first time initiated the Annual "Vhuthihi (Unity) Community Theatre and Crafts Development Forum" at the Hillbrow Theatre, that aimed at promoting South African performing arts by giving up and coming young artists from all over the country the opportunity to perform their works for the people of Hillbrow. In addition to that, the groups are offered workshops in both arts and administration - a great help for both the groups and relationships between the various groups.
M.U.K.A. Project receives periodic support from the National Arts Council of South Africa and various private donors. Certain projects have been funded by a number of organisations both in South Africa and abroad. They are solely responsible for raising funds to continue their community development work through interactive drama, incl. workshops, crafts and performances.
