Newport
Community Choir has been singing together since 2005 under the leadership of
Sarah Harman. Alongside he
work with the Newport Choir, Sarah teaches voice at the Royal Welsh College
of Music and Drama and
is a natural voice practitioner with over 25 years experience of community
based voice work. The choir practices every
Thursday evening. Everyone is welcome to join. You do not have to be a good
singer or to be able
to read music. The idea is for the group to explore and develop
their voices together in a supportive and non-judgemental
way. One of the members of the
choir describes their experience: “I had
not sung in a choir since I was a child and certainly did not see myself as a
singer. That has all changed now! I am not a good singer or a bad singer – I
just sing! It’s a wonderful feeling to
feel the power of our voices together and to know that your
little bit is part of the bigger picture.
Every week we start off with a long warm up. Some of the things that
Sarah gets us to do with our voices seem silly at first – but gradually you
realize that you do have a
voice – somewhere!” Last year Sarah wrote a suite
of songs to celebrate the centenary of the Newport Transporter Bridge. “Steel
Threads” was then performed at the Crow Point Festival. A CD of these songs
has been produced. For further information on how
to join the choir contact us at info@maindee.org
