Spiral Brothers
Afternoon DJs on the Unison World & Jazz Stage
Named after an old 80's rave outfit, the Spiral Brother (also known as Dave and Bruno) are establishing themselves as a leading eclectic / world music DJ outfit. They had their second annual session at the Glastonbury Festival this year. We are very pleased that the Brothers will be keeping things on track all afternoon on our main stage as well.
Dave started DJ'ing when I was 30 in Baker's Row night club (now Metro) on a Wednesday night for half an hour slots. The first night that he arrived the owner couldn't remember his name, or the second week, or the third, so "I said the first name that came to mind........... Maximillion!.......... I've been Max ever since." Says Dave..or should that be Max?
"I soon landed a residency in Tony's Wine Bar and continued playing around Cardiff for the next nine years. I played mostly residencies and private parties. Gassy Jacks was my favourite job, it was an eleven o' clock finish, which all DJs will tell you is bliss, usual finish time is 2am.
Although I loved DJ'ing, it wasn't financially rewarding and the hours were late so I stopped and found myself a 9-5, which I have now been doing for five and a half years, I was still subscribing to magazines to keep up to date with the music world and collecting music. Now that I had security in my job I felt that I could start my hobby again, I began DJ'ing in a local club. I was happy.
One evening by accident I met Bruno. He was selling his art door-to-door. We began talking and clicked. The Spiral Brothers were born. Our first gig was to be Clifton Street Carnival, which unfortunately was a wash out so we set up our gear in one of the Cafes. We were well received.
The music we play is a mixture of World, Dance and Electronica. Bruno and I work well together, he's the artistic one who makes t-shirts, backdrops etc., whilst I'm the one who's the music buff. Bruno's partner Annette organizes the gigs.
We played Glastonbury, the Avalon stage, first in 2003. Bruno has worked there for years as a graphic artist, dressing stages, making back drops etc. so we were paid, had protected camping, and were near the Jazz and World stage. We played Friday, Saturday and Sunday split with two other DJ's. It was brilliant.
Our equipment is a mixer and C.D player, we hire an amplifier.
We played the Coal Exchange, at Christmas, for refugees and asylum seekers, organised by Dep-Cult. It was a real success, people from the audience came on stage singing, playing drums, there was even a Kurdish dance performed, it truly was a magical evening.
My advice to anyone interested in DJ'ing would be to buy music that you like, find a suitable venue and start with a small slot. Good Luck. Don't forget to make sure that you have the right equipment, shop around.
I hope that the Spiral Brothers continue in the future, if you haven't already seen us then keep your eyes peeled for posters advertising dates and venues.
